FERAL FORAGE

Feral Forage is an ongoing artistic research project that began in Russia in 2014, when Pasmur Rachuiko turned to foraging during a period of economic crisis, food embargoes and increasing state control. What started as a personal response to instability gradually became a way of examining food as a political resource and the everyday mechanisms through which power enters private life.

At the centre of the project are wild edible plants — species that exist largely outside systems of cultivation, production and market exchange. For Rachuiko, foraging becomes a form of autonomy: a practice that opens a temporary space beyond institutional and economic control.

These plants also serve as carriers of historical memory. Through them, Feral Forage traces histories of famine, displacement, repression and survival, particularly within Russia and the former Soviet territories. Weeds and overlooked edible plants become witnesses to events usually absorbed into larger political narratives.

By turning toward these marginal forms of life, Rachuiko constructs alternative histories based on small, fragmentary and often forgotten stories. Against monumental narratives of state, empire and ideology, Feral Forage proposes another scale of attention — one shaped by survival, memory and the persistent presence of what remains outside the system.
